Scrubbers Lane

by Grahame Hedges

Here are the first phase layout plan/ideas for my NGS MAG competition entry. The main objective is for a simple, quick build layout that doubles as a test track and diorama.

Considerations/requirements;

  • Provides a small, portable and easy to erect layout/test track.
  • Provides a test bed for lightweight baseboard construction.
  • Has inclusive on-board electrics with my standard plug in power supply (phono-plug sockets) and controller leads (DIN sockets).
  • Doubles as a diorama for photographing models.
  • Includes a siding or two for shunting options.
  • Includes an EMU/carriage washing plant (one thing I wanted but was unable to fit in to my ‘Stoney Lane Depot’ layout plan).

Period/location/style:

  • Non specific era to cover wide period/date range.
  • ‘Southern’ third rail country to allow EMUs.
  • Seedy gritty grimy industrial/urban setting.

Track plan design;

  • Single track continuous for running-in /testing.
  • Passing loop (for washer).
  • Sidings (to hold stock/for shunting)
  • Non obstructed./camera friendly track view for diorama photography.

Look/standards;

  • As ‘fine-scale’, detailed and as realistic as possible.
  • Minimum 2nd radius (10.5”) curves.
  • Code 55 track and full ballasting on scenic side.
  • Back-scene required for ease of photography composition.
